History of the original design. The original Cosmograph Daytona arrived in 1963 as a chronograph developed for motor racing. Its timing displays and bezel-mounted tachymetric scale made elapsed time and average speed central to its visual identity. Rolex had partnered with Daytona International Speedway since its opening in 1959, and the Daytona name gradually became established on the watch's dial. A screw-down-pusher version followed in 1965. Those beginnings help explain the collection's enduring design language: a round case, three counters and a prominent bezel, linking a practical timing idea with the visual culture of motor sport.
